Exporting from PM3 into Microsoft Project
On hitting an Export icon on the Milestone Plan or Gantt page, the project information of the plan is exported as an xml file to your Downloads folder with the filename taken from the Plan Name. There are 3 export icons – each exporting a subset of the contents of the plan: Key: exports Workstreams and Key Milestones and their dependencies Milestones only: exports Workstreams and All Milestones and their dependencies • All only: exports Workstreams and All Milestones and Tasks and their dependencies. Then within MS-Project, simply load the file via File> Open and choose the latest xml file in your Downloads folder. MS- Project presents you with 3 options: New project – this will use the UniqueIDs (UID) in the import file. Append – this will ignore the UniqueIDs in the import file and create new ones for the imported items. Merge – this will use the UniqueIDs in the file. So if you ever plan in future to load data from the MS-Project project back into PM3, you must avoid the Append option. Two-way consistency between an MS-Project project and a PM3 Project relies on maintaining unchanged UniqueIDs for synchronisation. See the notes below on Re-importing files. The items in the export are in the PM3 page default ordering i.e. as they appear after a Refresh. You can set the default ordering in PM3 by arranging the page how you like then clicking the ‘Save order’ icon.
